Today I start the second day of the basketball unit, I will have the same warm-up and move into a few rounds of
- Fitness Tag -
Tagged by a red noodle - 20 jumping jacks
Tagged by a blue noodle - 20 windmills
Tagged by a green noodle - 20 mountain climbers
We play 3 rounds of this games. (First round the fleeing students skip, Second they gallop or shuffle and Third they can move freely)
Taggers have to move a certain way...
Blue jersey - swim like fish with hands together on the rubber fish
Green jersey - swim like a frog with one hand on the frog and then both arms making circles out in front of themselves
Red jersey - move like the fleeing students (running, skipping, galloping, shuffling, etc.) but hold both hands on the noodle like an elephants snout (NEW)
Next, I will have the students each get a ball and do some
- Red Light, Green light Basketball -
Red - "Chin-it" position
Green - Dribble in own space
Yellow - Dribble and walk
Blue - Dribble and jog
Purple - Chest Pass to the wall (NEW)
Orange - Bounce Pass to the wall (NEW)
White - Shoot freely at any of the 8 hoops in the gym
After about 10 minutes, I will start elimination round. If a student is out, they will go to their side of the gym and get into their teams. When the game is finished we will play
- 4-Hoop Basketball -
The students are divided into 4 equal teams and are seated on the sideline behind a cone. Each student is given a number. Each student is given a hoop to guard/protect. When a number is called, the member of each team stands up and plays against 3 other students with one ball. If someone makes a basket into your teams hoop, you receive a point. You don't want points in this game. I may call out multiple numbers at a time. If a student grabs or pulls at another students they must sit back behind his/her cone. The game will be played for about 10-15 minutes.

4th grade went very well. It helped that I kept the warm-up short and that both classes have played Fitness Tag. This allowed them to start playing sooner and for a longer period of time rather than me having to explain the rules of the game. The students were under control and really enjoyed the game. I saw some students using different tactics to help them tag or to flee. 3rd grade came in rowdy so the warm-up took longer. I needed to slow things down. I would "Freeze" the students in between each exercise and then pause for a few seconds before saying the next exercise. This worked well to calm the class down but it did take more time. We were only able to get to red light green light basketball and did not get to 4 hoop basketball. I still consider this a good day because if I were to rush through the lesson, the students would feel the anxiety in my teaching and not improve their behavior.
