The students came into the class and did our normal warm-up - I'll have to make a post just about the warm-up we do, because with 50 kids, it does so much for our kids to be able to move right away when they enter the gym. The warm-up went for about 8 minutes and then we moved right into playing a game of color tag for each class. I added the variation of the kids on the ground being able to tag students running by. This allows them to be more engaged when they are "out." It does require more attention because the kids on the ground tend to move around and don't stay where they are. The other thing I need to pay attention to is who the student fleeing from the taggers gets tagged by because if I miss it, there could be two students arguing over who tagged the runner first. Being aware just provides for better classroom management.
After color tag, we moved into a few dribble relays
once down with right hand, back with left hand walking
once down with right hand, back with left hand jogging
once down with right and left hand crossover, and back the same way walking
once down with right and left hand crossover, and back the same way jogging
For 4th grade, I added a passing drill I used to do with coaching summer basketball camps
in a group of 4 students, student 1 dribbles to the first line - then passes to ST2, ST2 dribbles to the second line - passes to ST3, ST3 dribbles to the third line - then passes to ST2 who passes to ST1 who passes to ST4, ST4 dribbles to the final line - then passes to ST3 who passes to ST2 who passes to ST1 who dribbles to the final line - then passes to ST3 who passes to ST2 who dribbles to the final line - then passes to ST3 who dribbles to the final line and then the whole team sits.
This passing drill can be done with more or less students or lines, just continue the same sequence. After the students have run the drill a few times, I alter the sequence with bounce passes and/or having the group return back to the starting line using the same sequence.
After some work with the passing relays, we moved onto Ultimate Basketball.
Ultimate Basketball (much like Ultimate Frisbee)
-The goal of this game is to work with your team to move a ball from one side of the court to the other side without the ball hitting the ground. In order to complete the goal, the team members can pass the ball to each other. If a student has the ball, they cannot take more than one step. If you do not have the ball, you may run to get away from the defenders. If you are on defense, you must be at least one step away from the student holding the ball, you can intercept a passed ball but you may not steal the ball from someone holding the ball. After a team has made at least 3 successful passes, they may take a shot.
I love this game but we progressed to playing by the rules through the following alterative forms of the game.
-Each team gets a ball to practice moving down the court with only passes and not taking more than one step. When they reach the end, they turn around and practice going to the opposite end line.
-Two teams play against each other. A team must try to make a successful pass before touching the ball to the opposing teams wall.
-Two teams play against each other. A team must try to make 3 successful passes before touching the ball to the opposing teams wall.
-Two teams play against each other. A team must try to make a successful pass before shooting into the opposing hoop.
-Two teams play against each other. A team must try to make 3 successful passes before shooting into the opposing hoop.
-4 teams play against each other. A team must try to make a successful pass before touching the ball against their own wall.

-4 teams play against each other. A team must try to make a successful pass before shooting into their own goal.

I know, I know... that is a lot of variations, but some move through real easy transitions and they all don't happen in one day. There are plenty of other variations. The students could move in different way (skipping, galloping, shuffling, leaping like a frog, swimming like a fish, hopping like a bunny, etc.)
After a full day in the gym, we wrapped it up with our closing circle. The students stood around and we discussed a few of the rules from the games today.
Looking forward to a great afternoon!
