Teacher Forgotten....

This doesn't happen often, but sometimes I feel like a forgotten teacher. This morning, I had a teacher arrive with her class and proceed to hold three students back and instruct them that "Mr. Mike is not going to give you any warnings. If you cant follow directions, he will send you to the KIP station." Now there are days that I will help a teacher out when they say the kids have been rowdy or if there are specific students who haven't been making the best choices, but to just tell me what I am to do is inconsiderate. I am more than willing to help, but the behavior did not occur in the gym, so to punish the student in the gym will do nothing for solving the issue in the classroom.

Below is a brief outline of what the KIP station involves...

Expectations for the K I P STATION

- Student goes to the K I P STATION promptly, quickly, and calmly.
- Student regains focus and control while at the K I P STATION  by completing the assigned task sheet.
- Student comes back from the K I P STATION  when the sheet is complete and they are calm.
- Mr. Mike can decide if the student can or cannot come back from the K I P STATION  on their own.
- When the student is allowed to come back the K I P STATION, he or she will come back quietly and rejoin the activity.
- Students who are not at the K I P STATION  will help their classmate by leaving them alone, participating in the activity and quietly welcoming them back to class.

My task sheets for the students may include exercise task cards sorted out by intermediate and primary elementary levels. This addition has made time out/thinking time short and productive since the kids have something to accomplish and then can rejoin the class. During the first few weeks of school I try to send the kids over to the KIP station at least once or twice so they know the expectations for that area.
